The upcoming iOS 18 update, announced at WWDC 2024, is set to bring a plethora of new features to iPhone users, including a game-changing addition to the emergency SOS functionality.

Apple's latest press release revealed that iOS 18 will allow users to "share context through streaming video and recorded media" during emergency calls. This update aims to provide dispatchers with a clearer perspective of the situation at hand, enabling them to respond effectively and efficiently.

Initiating an emergency call on an iPhone involves holding down the power button along with either volume button, which prompts a countdown on the screen. Continuing to hold these buttons places the emergency call.

While the live video feature is yet to be demonstrated, as iOS 18 is currently in developer beta, it is expected that users will be given options to start a livestream or send recorded videos during emergency calls.

What Else to Expect in iOS 18

The addition of live video support to emergency SOS calls is one among many exciting features in the upcoming iOS 18 update. Enhancements like the ability to secure apps and tailor home screen appearances, as well as integrated features that may replace certain third-party apps, are eagerly anticipated by users.

Apple is also introducing substantial improvements to its Apple Intelligence tools, including a more advanced Siri. However, these features will initially be available only on specific iPhone models.

The public beta of iOS 18 is scheduled for release next month, allowing a broader user base to experience its offerings. The full rollout of the update is expected in September, coinciding with the launch of the new iPhone 16 models.

Stay tuned for more updates on iOS 18 and the exciting new capabilities it will bring to your iPhone experience.
